A Few months ago I had the luck of receiving an invitation from one of my siblings to meet with him in Geneva and spend together the Christmas time, after one and a half year of living alone in Budapest, this was a wonderful gift, the chance to enjoy in family this shared celebration.
When I started my trip I couldn’t control my excitement, and I refer to start my trip to the day that I started the whole process, when I bought my ticket, and discovered that I had to spend one night alone in Geneva, I did my luggage and prepare to leave. At the moment I arrived to the airport here in Hungary, everything felt like a dream, I couldn’t believe that it was actually happening I was leaving to Switzerland, I board my plane with nothing else that a small bag and a thousand thoughts rounding my mind about what to do with this new experience. When I sat down, my imagination was overflowing, and nothing could have ever captivate me more, than the chance of flying next to the sunset, the beautiful panorama hypnotized me, while I got deep into my thoughts.
After a short and easy flight, I´m still get very surprise every time I realize how easy is to travel between countries around Europe, I landed in Geneva, at this moment I realized that I was in a totally unknown city without a plan. The first thing that came to my mind was: “I need a place to crash”, and with this in mind I started asking around about places to sleep, cheap hostels, everything counted. After a good research I found a pretty cheap hostel with breakfast included not to far away from the airport, because I knew I had to come back.
In the hostel, I met some pretty interesting people from all around the world, with them I shared histories between drinks and laughs, after that we went around the city, because as I always said: “You can´t judge a city until you know the night life in it”. What took me to discover some pretty cool places around the lake while I enjoyed the view underneath the moonlight.
The next morning I woke up really early and went all over the city, knowing this might be my only chance, and the first thing that kept my attention was: the equality of modernism with progression, I was in shock, I couldn’t believe how they could keep in perfect shape some really old and historical buildings, while next to them I found some huge modern buildings made of glass. Every detail of this city was in perfect state, I could feel the pride of this people for their history, just by seeing the way they treated their historical buildings, but also giving the impression of progress and development.
I walked around by myself for few hours, and in all this time I couldn’t notice a single detail that would allow me to criticize the city, the people were very kind, the city was clean, in good state, and also pretty safe
Something that really called my attention was the localization and the infrastructure of the city. Geneva is divided by a lake, what made the developers to build a tourist center all around it, building different types of shops and attractions for the tourists. Also Geneva is surrounded by some mountains what gives a perfect strategic position at war time, and a beautiful tourist point at the sunset´s time with some good company watching at the lake.
Another very important point about my experience in Europe and that keeps amazing me every time, is the cultural diversity in every country, the ease movement in and between them. The whole time I spent there, first I could communicate with everyone and second I could hear a good amount of different languages, and also see different kind of people, what makes me intrigue myself the ease that these people have to adapt to a new environment
With this city I got delighted, I had an unforgettable experience, and this was only the start of my Christmas trip around Switzerland, due to when the sun fell down and I meet with my family, we started another trip to the Alps, a trip that I will talk about in another ocation. But there is something I can say for sure, and is that someday I´ll go back to Geneva to discover those places that I couldn’t discover the first time.
